How to Make Photos Private On Facebook

Putting photos on Facebook is simple; not so easy is keeping all those Facebook photos personal, "How to Make Photos Private On Facebook".

Watch Out for "Public" by Default

By default, Facebook all too often makes images and other material you post on the social network public, meaning anyone can see it. So your huge challenge with sharing Facebook images is ensuring you limit who can see them.

Facebook altered its privacy settings in a significant redesign in 2011. The new privacy settings provide Facebook users more granular control over who gets to see what, but they also are a bit more complicated and can be hard to analyze.

Any photo that you're tagged in "belongs" to another person. Unless it's a picture of you that you tagged yourself in.

If it's an image of you that you took and tagged yourself in, you "own" the image, and are therefore in charge of its privacy settings. You can choose "Just Me" from the drown down menu on the image, thus:

Images that others have tagged you in will stay public, even if you remove the tag from that photo Whoever submitted the image that your tagged in "owns" that image.

To remove a tag, click the drop down arrow at the top of the post/ photo and click "Eliminate Tag":

You'll get this alert though:

You can also change your timeline privacy settings. These are mine:

Go to settings from the fall menu:

Then choose "Timeline and Tagging".

You'll be able to manage exactly what can be posted on your timeline, and if you see somebody has tagged a photo of you, you can get rid of the tag and opt to hide it from your timeline.

Facebook will notify you to anyone who's tagged you in anything on your real timeline, at the bottom right of your cover image.

In summary, only your very own material can be made private. Anything you've been tagged in by others will be public - however you have the choice to conceal this content from your timeline.
